Our Story
A dream, a food truck, and a whole lot of smoothie bowls
Inspired by the vibrant food culture in Bali
Soul Boul was founded by Alexandra Handcock and Stacey Horton, who met while studying in Dunedin in 2015. Bonding over a shared love of wholesome food, health, and wellness, the pair quickly became close friends.
The idea for Soul Boul was born during a family trip to Bali, where Alex fell in love with the vibrant, nourishing café culture. Inspired to bring that feeling home, the girls began turning the dream into reality.
A generous family friend believed in the vision and kindly gifted them the use of a food truck, giving them the chance to see if their dream had legs—without taking on loans from the bank or their families.
From a dream to two thriving locations
After five summers on the road, Soul Boul found its first permanent home in Mount Maunganui in 2021, opening a tiny hole-in-the-wall café on the bustling Main Street.
The incredible support from our community gave us the confidence to grow, leading to a second location in Hamilton East. Before long, our little Mount café had become too small, so we moved into a larger space just around the corner. Allowing us to welcome more people and continue expanding our menu.
Growing Our Families & Our Business
2024 marked one of our biggest years yet. We relocated into our first, beautiful standalone Mount café while both welcoming babies into our families.
It was a season that reinforced what Soul Boul has always been about: balance, family, community, and creating a business that supports a healthy, fulfilling lifestyle.
As Soul Boul continues to grow, we're incredibly excited to be opening our third location in Takapuna, Auckland. We can't wait to become part of the North Shore community and share everything we love about Soul Boul with even more people.
